Region 9 recently hosted a one day Monster Bag workshop tutored by Beth Connors which was enjoyed by a small group of IFA members and one guest.
Beth provided additional materials and demonstrated each stage so all course participants whether expert feltmakers or relative newcomers were able to produce a colourful character.
Initially we laid out fibres over a template to create a seamless bag with integral handles. After laying out 2 layers, the “face” was strengthened with further fibres prior to placing large-bubble wrap resist for eyes, nose and mouth. A layer of fibres were placed over the resists and then a further 2 layers over the whole to complete the bag.
Our Monsters were then felted, we cut and finished the handles and flaps. Next the bubble wrap resists were removed through slits (quite a gruesome surgical procedure) so eyes, mouth and nose could be shaped and finished. Needle felted eyes were inserted and details added to create character, some participants created scars. Hair, eyelashes and teeth could be added.
At the end of the day with Beth’s expert tuition and samples we were all successful in creating “Monsters” of very different personalities. My daughter has already claimed mine!
